Many items are available on the market to deal with plumbing nasties, but there is one that has been around for a long time that usually comes up trumps if you have a blockage in your pipework and that is something called a drain snake. Its construction is of a coiled metal spiral that is shaped like a snake, and that is usually about ? in diameter and can be up to 25ft in length with a fitted handle and can be retracted. The snake works differently than something like the plunger. How To Use:The Snake is plunged into the drain, using a twist type of motion it is rotated further into the pipework with the block. It lets you push right up to and into the bulk of the mass that is stuck in the pipe and begin breaking it up. Its length can reach deep in the pipework, and this can be too much for a DIY amateur. Clapham Plumbers always have the right gear equipment for any plumbing task. With this job lots of force can be needed when turning the handle, this to allow the snake move through the various bends in the pipework. Snakes can be attached to electric drills, which increases the force. This rotation lets the end of the snake snag itself in the bulk, hopefully breaking it apart and bits to be pulled free with the rest being flushed away. A Clapham Plumber uses the drain snake. Sink Blockage Prevention:1). Use a sink plug hole strainer, it will let the water pass but stop quite a lot of solids from going down the drain in the kitchen sink, or hair in the bathroom. For Garbage Disposal Users:1). When in use, always run the cold water especially at a high speed to help the machine mash up the garbage. Run the water for more than a minute or so after you are done. This flushes the mush out of the small bore sink pipework and into the big main outside drain.
